What is a Family Physician?

Family physicians are specialists, just like obstetricians, pediatricians or surgeons. The family physician’s job is to evaluate the total healthcare needs of the individual. They often treat whole families, from newborns to the elderly due their comprehensive training. Family physicians are experts in managing common health conditions and are considered specialists in preventative care and health maintenance. They are often the first to address a disease or illness. Family Physicians are also responsible for referring patients to other physicians when more specialized evaluation or treatment is required. They are often regarded as valuable consultants to the family in these cases and serve as advocates for their patients. Family Physicians also supervise the practice of P.A.’s and N.P’s who work alongside them to form a healthcare team.

What is a D.O.?

A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, commonly referred to as a D.O., is a physician who has completed their education at an osteopathic medical school. D.O.’s are trained to regard the body as an integrated whole. Although both M.D.s and D.O.s receive similar education, D.O. programs require 300 hours of osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) training, focusing on the musculoskeletal system.
D.O.s are authorized to practice medicine across all states. They prescribe medications, perform surgeries, and specialize in various fields. D.O.’s may also utilize osteopathic manual medicine (OMM) to both diagnose and treat patients.

What is an M.D.?

An M.D., or medical doctor, practices the classical form of medicine called allopathic medicine, also known as conventional medicine or Western medicine. Like D.O.s, they are trained through several years of coursework then several years of residency before entering into clinical practice. Both M.D.s and D.O.s are licensed to work in all 50 states and practice medicine independently of supervision. Additionally, many complete residencies at the same hospitals, and the physicians frequently become colleagues once their training is complete.
