DOT physicals are a medical exam required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. You must successfully complete this medical exam to legally drive a commercial vehicle in the United States.

DOT physicals are similar to an annual physical exam in some ways, but there are also specific driving-related assessments during a DOT physical. You can expect:

  • A medical history review
  • Full physical exam
  • Neurological screening
  • Blood pressure check
  • Heart function test – an echocardiogram (EKG)
  • Basic vision test – wearing corrective lenses if you have them
  • Basic hearing test – wearing a hearing aid if you have one

DOT physicals are good for up to 24 months. However, if you have a chronic condition, like diabetes or high blood pressure, your DOT physical is most likely good for 12 months instead. At the time of your exam, the team explains how long your test results last.
