High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a condition that effects 1 in every 3 adults. “Blood pressure is the force of blood against your artery walls as it circulates through your body.” (CDC 2012) Normal blood pressures rises and falls throughout the day, but it may cause health problems if it stays high for a long period of time.
High blood pressure is sometimes known as the “silent killer”, because many people have no signs or symptoms. The only way to detect whether you have high blood pressure is to have it checked. About 1 in 5 U.S. adults actually have high blood pressure and don’t even know it.
Hypertension isn’t 100% preventable, but there are steps people at any age can take to help keep their blood pressure levels normal:
- Eat a healthy diet
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Be physically active
